Marathon Calendar of Events for July, 2012

Marathon / July 6 – 8
Have some fun on the water while competing for prizes and trophies during the two-day underwater hunting event. All proceeds are donated to the local American Cancer Society at the Relay for Life event here in Marathon. Entry fees $100 per two-person team or $50 per person. Sponsored by Captain Hook's Marina & Dive Center

Marathon / July 9 – 13
The tiny Middle Keys island of Pigeon Key is offering summer Marine Science Camp opportunities for children age 8 and older. Designed to offer hands-on daily programs, Pigeon Key Marine Science Camp includes workshops on marine mammals, reef fish, coral reef systems and invertebrates as well as hard and soft corals found in Florida and Caribbean waters. In addition, campers can take workshops on underwater photography and the gathering of specimens. Participants age 10 and older also can get scuba certification during a camp session or take a refresher course if already certified.

Marathon / July 21 – 22
Marathon Lionfish Tournament
Lionfish hunters can earn cash prizes for first place and runners up in most, biggest and smallest categories. Hosted by Sanctuary Friends, the weekend before the lobster mini-season and a great time for people to scout out favorite lobster holes. Registration can take place at any of the participating dive shops: A Deep Blue Dive, Captain Hook's, Tilden's, Dive Duck Key, Hall's, Big Time Bait and Tackle or Abyss Dive Center. The fee for a four-person team is $100 and includes hot dogs and beverages at the team meeting at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 20, at Captain Hooks, and a lionfish tasting and award banquet is set to be held at Sparky's Landing on Sunday, at 6 p.m.
