  • Enjoy the “Flora & Fauna: Early Naturalists in Florida” exhibit through September 13 at Key West Museum of Art & History's Custom House, Museum, 281 Front Street. The exhibit includes short biographies of the principal naturalists working in the Florida Territory in the early nineteenth century alongside representations of their Florida-inspired works. Their observation of plants and animals was an art as well as a science.

  • For years, the Florida Keys Council of the Arts has gathered mini-canvases from area artists to create one large Keys art mural/mosaic its annual Connections Project. This year, the council created five separate murals and, at each opening reception in each region of the Keys, is including live music to create a multi-faceted celebration of the artistic spirit that makes the Keys so special. The free Key West reception on April 16 culminates the Connections Project. It takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. at Williams Hall, 729 Fleming St. Attendees can enjoy live music by Jillian Todd, Bobby Nesbit and Carmen Rodriguez. Individual canvases from the mosaic are to be available for purchase for $100 each.

  • The Key West Southernmost Runners' 26th annual Earth Day 5k Run/Walk takes place Saturday at Truman Waterfront Park at the end of Southard St. The start and finish line is near the U.S .Coast Guard Cutter Ingham Maritime Museum. Proceeds from the race benefit the Conch Republic Marine Army, a local non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to cleaning and restoring the shallow mangrove habitats of the Florida Keys. Registration is $25 per person (free for children under 5 with a parent). Participants can register online or in person at the race location from 5 to 7 p.m. April 19, and at 7 a.m. April 20 before the 8 a.m. race start.

  • The Swim America Florida Keys Open Water Swim raises funds that go directly to cancer research and patient care programs at Miami Cancer Institute. Each participating swimmer age 18 and over is asked to raise a minimum of $500, and those under 18, a minimum of $200. Swimmers can elect to swim alone or as part of a team. Distance options are 1/2 mile; 1 mile; and 2 miles. The event takes place at Founders Park, mile marker 87 bayside. Swimming starts at 9:45 a.m. and there is to be a post-event celebration on the Founders Park beach at 11:15 a.m.

The Conch Republic Military’s K-9 Unit joins forces with the Florida Keys SPCA for the annual Reenlistment and Recruitment Muster, where one of the K-9 Corps members will win the "‘Best in Show" Prize for their combat gear. Each canine’s $25 annual K-9 Corps membership fee includes the muster, doggie bags with goodies, small nibbles for pups, and Yappy Hour prices for their handlers, and is required to participate in the Thursday Conch Republic Longest Parade K-9 Corp Crew. Costume judging at 6pm. The festivities take place at Bad Boy Taqueria at the Perry Hotel, 7011 Shrimp Rd., Stock Island.
