Activities for Children in Big Pine and the Lower Keys

Your children can enjoy a full schedule of eco-tours, dive-snorkel charters, fishing trips and visits to area attractions. They can also stay busy between excursions with free activities. The quiet side streets and pedestrians pathways of this area often reveal alligators (see the Blue Hole entry below), numerous water birds, iguanas and of course, our world famous Key deer, a diminutive cousin of the Virginia white tail deer.

Bay Point Park
U.S. 1, Miler Marker 15, Oceanside
This community park offers a soccer field, basketball court and tennis courts, and a small playground with swings.

Blue Heron Park
Lytton’s Way (Off Key Deer Boulevard)
This well-equipped community park offers basketball courts, playgrounds, pavilions, and portable bathrooms.

Blue Hole
Key Deer Boulevard (Off U.S. 1, Mile Marker 30)
This small, freshwater pond isn’t blue but don’t let that bother you. It is home to alligators, turtles and numerous fish that are easily and safely viewed from a wooden observation deck. Leashed dogs are allowed on the trail surrounding the pond.

Boondocks Grill & Drafthouse & Miniature Golf
27205 U.S. Highway 1 (Mile Marker 27.5)
The ONLY Miniature Golf course in the Florida Keys! Fun for the whole family! Perfect for Birthday parties, groups and special events. Great snacks and full liquor bar!

National Key Deer Refuge
Just before sunset, simply drive or ride a bike cautiously to the end of Key Deer Boulevard. You're bound to see deer strolling out of the woods to feed. These deer are wild and healthy so please don't feed or touch them. For more information, stop by the refuge headquarters in the Winn-Dixie shopping plaza off Key Deer Blvd.

No Name Key Bridge
This scenic bridge links No Name Key to Big Pine Key. It is a popular spot to take kids fishing. The evening sightseeing is also excellent for birds and Key deer. We suggest you park your car and walk along the pedestrian walkway.

Veteran's Memorial Park and Beach
U.S. 1, Mile Marker 39, Oceanside (West end of Seven Mile Bridge)
This convenient beach offers beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean. It offers covered picnic tables for those who need shade. It is a nice spot to show children the shallow-water, flats habitat of the Keys.
