Lower Keys Island Art Fest to Blend Seasonal Cheer and Community Spirit

BIG PINE KEY, Florida Keys — Local artisans’ wares, live music and edible temptations await visitors at the annual Big Pine & Lower Keys Island Art Festival scheduled Saturday, Nov. 25, in a show of seasonal spirit in the midst of ongoing recovery from Hurricane Irma.

Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Susan Miller said the chamber’s annual holiday festivities, traditionally held Thanksgiving weekend, are more important than ever after the hurricane’s Sept.10 impact on the area.

“The festival is a chance for the community to come together, celebrate local creativity and welcome the upcoming holiday season,” Miller said. “It’s also a way for visitors to support and recognize the Lower Keys’ recovery from the storm.”

The open-air fair is to be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the grounds of the chamber headquarters at mile marker 31 oceanside in Big Pine.

Designed to be fun for the entire family, the event is a place to find one-of-a-kind holiday gifts and artwork while enjoying the Lower Keys’ subtropical climate and tranquil natural atmosphere.

Scheduled highlights include exhibits and booths featuring original arts, crafts and other creations by Florida Keys artists and artisans.

Items are to be raffled throughout the festival, providing attendees chances to win examples of handcrafted Keys artistry as special gifts or personal treasures.

Santa and Mrs. Claus are scheduled to make an appearance, and those “hungry” to start the festive season can compete in a new holiday cookie–eating contest.

Other planned attractions include live music by favorite local performers, as well as food and beverages from on-site vendors.

Admission and parking are free, but attendees are requested not to bring picnic baskets or coolers.
