FLORIDA KEYS -- Weather Channel meteorologist Jim Cantore is to showcase the Florida Keys’ subtropical climate, laid-back lifestyle and free-spirited residents in an episode of the network’s new documentary series “Cantore Stories,” scheduled to premiere Sunday, Feb. 14, at 10 p.m. ET.

Titled “Florida Keys: Keys to Paradise,” the 30-minute episode explores how the island chain’s climate influences its residents’ work, leisure activities and way of life.

While Cantore is best known as The Weather Channel’s “Storm Tracker,” broadcasting from regions expecting or undergoing severe weather, his “Cantore Stories” focuses on the ways normal regional weather conditions impact communities and the people who call them home.

Segments shot for the Keys episode include an interview with Key Largo dive shop owner Captain Spencer Slate, a fishing trip in Islamorada waters with Captain Richard Stanczyk, a loggerhead turtle release off Marathon with Turtle Hospital founder Richie Moretti and an introduction to shipwreck salvage with the grandson of legendary Key West treasure hunter Mel Fisher. Key West’s sunset celebration, quirky Schooner Wharf Bar and Fantasy Fest activities also were filmed.

“Cantore Stories takes a look at how unique climates shape a region and how people adapt to the lifestyle in these extraordinary environments,” said Geoffrey Darby, executive vice president of programming at The Weather Channel. “This series is a chance for viewers to see Jim in a new light as he visits these communities under more normal circumstances instead of when severe weather is approaching.”

The Weather Channel can be viewed in more than 98 million American households. Other “Cantore Stories” episodes profile the climates and personalities of locales including California’s Death Valley, the Louisiana bayou and Minnesota’s International Falls, known as the coldest town in the Continental United States.
