Broadway Comes to Civil War-Era Fort in Key West

Keys History
This Keys History story spotlights an historically focused attraction, event, person or place that enriches the Florida Keys

The world premiere of an innovative professional dance production is set for 13-15 April in Key West, amidst the grounds of a Civil War-era fort in the Florida Keys island city.

'Key West Reverie' was conceived, directed and choreographed by New York City's Wendy Taucher Dance Opera Theater and produced by The Studios of Key West. Described as an impressionistic portrait of the city, the site-specific performance will be staged at the West Martello Tower.

Featuring a cast of world-renowned and Broadway-starring dancers, musicians and vocalists together with talented Key West professional and volunteer performers, the production is designed as a series of vignettes staged in multiple locations within the grounds of the picturesque oceanfront fort. Rather than being seated in one location to watch the show, audiences stroll through the grounds, encountering performances while discovering the site's weathered brick arches, towering trees, abundant flowers and plants and tranquil peace garden maintained by the Key West Garden Club.

"The production encapsulates the Key West experience from history and environment to Duval Street," said Taucher, an award-winning American director and choreographer. "The event has artistic and popular elements, stars from Broadway and the Metropolitan Opera, and a mix of musical and movement styles."

The production's stars include the Tony Award-nominated dancer and actress Karine Plantadit and widely acclaimed Metropolitan Opera singer Stefan Szkafarowsky.
