ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys – Blues legend Bo Diddley headlined a “Florida Keys for Katrina Relief” concert Sunday in Islamorada.
The event was conceived by a coalition of local businesses and civic organizations to raise funds to help Islamorada's recently-adopted sister city, Ocean Springs, Miss., that was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
Inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, Diddley began performing at sunset with his unique rectangular, “cigar box” guitar, before an outdoor audience of several thousand concert attendees.
Born in Mississippi in 1928, Diddley’s own family members were impacted by Katrina.
“It’s called love,” said Diddley, when asked his thoughts about Islamorada helping a community more than 800 miles away. “That’s America.
“We believe in helping one another,” Diddley said. “I’m here to try to help whatever I can do to help get a little money in the kitty so a lot of people can be helped.”
The concert also featured saxophonist Clarence Clemons of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, E. Jaye Brown, former lead singer with Sly and the Family Stone as well as favorite local bands.
Organizers won’t know exactly how much money was raised until the end of the week.
