CONCH REPUBLIC NAVY TO COMMISSION BASE AT STOCK ISLAND'S SAFE HARBOR MARINA

The WOLF symbolizes the essence of the “island spirit” which draws visitors from all parts of the world.

The WOLF symbolizes the essence of the “island spirit” which draws visitors from all parts of the world.

STOCK ISLAND, Florida Keys - The Conch Republic Navy, formed in 1982 when Florida Keys dignitaries dubbed the island chain the independent Conch Republic, is to commission a new base at Safe Harbor Marina, 6810 Front St. on Stock Island, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29.

The commissioning ceremony is to be led by Admiral Finbar Gittelman of the Conch Republic Navy. The navy's flagship is Gittelman's Schooner Wolf, a 74-foot topsail schooner that recently relocated to the colorful Safe Harbor Marina approximately five miles from downtown Key West.

"The Conch Republic Navy boasts the largest sail-propelled navy in the world," said Gittelman's partner, Captain Julie McEnroe. "We're excited to showcase our new home port and marina neighborhood community."

The event is to kick off with a dock party saluting the 1940s. Highlights are to include a re-created USO atmosphere and dancing to the big band sounds of Mike Emerson's Southernmost Brass Band.

In addition to a silent auction benefiting local maritime and historical organizations and the Conch Republic Navy, the party is to feature a chance for aspiring sailors to enlist in the lighthearted navy and the sale of newly issued Conch Republic Peace Bonds.

Jazz legend Norma Miller, known as the queen of swing, is to be a special guest and share stories of her seven decades in show business. Celebrating her 87th birthday in Key West, Miller has shared the stage with such notables as Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong.

Prior to the gala, those seeking adventure on the high seas can join Gittelman, Safe Harbor Marina captains Joe O'Connell and Walter Crumbley, and event organizer Christie New aboard the Schooner Wolf for a VIP sunset sail and waterfront tour of the Stock Island area. To benefit the Key West Maritime Heritage Society, the two-hour sail is to board at 4 p.m. and depart promptly at 4:30 p.m. Seating is limited and reservations are required.

VIP admirals' tickets, which include the sunset sail and extended dock party, are $50 per person. Tickets for the party only are $15 per person.
