The garden at the Heritage House Museum and Robert Frost Cottage, teeming with exotic trees and plants and an extensive orchid collection, provide the perfect setting for the annual Poetry Festival.

KEY WEST, Florida Keys — The work of Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Robert Frost is to be celebrated Sunday, April 11, on the grounds of the Key West cottage where Frost wintered for more than a dozen years.

The 16th annual Robert Frost Poetry Festival, a celebration of poetry, is to be highlighted by the announcement of the winners of the Robert Frost International Poetry Contest for haiku and poetry. The event is to take place at the Key West Heritage House Museum & Robert Frost Cottage, 410 Caroline St.

Frost, who served as U.S. poet laureate in 1958-59, first visited Key West in 1934 and wrote one of his best-known poems, “The Gift Outright,” on the island. He subsequently paid winter visits to Key West from 1945 to 1960, staying in the small garden cottage now named for him.

The contest, featuring divisions for poetry and haiku written by adults, has drawn entries from around the world in past years. An affiliated contest for young poets is open to Florida Keys students of all grade levels.

The awards presentation is set for 1-3 p.m., with readings featuring contest winners and 3-5 p.m. open-microphone opportunities.
