KEY WEST, Florida Keys — A hot entertainment lineup and a warm welcome await attendees at Key West’s Womenfest, a celebration for lesbians and their friends set for Tuesday through Sunday, Sept. 7-12, in the island city known for its all-welcoming diversity.
Thousands of singles, couples and groups of women are expected to flock to Key West to immerse themselves in activities ranging from women-only snorkeling and watersports excursions to late-night dance parties.
Festival highlights are to include a rollicking comedy performance by Suzanne Westenhoefer, renowned as the first openly gay comic to host her own HBO comedy special. Her current national tour, titled “Totally Inappropriate,” offers mostly unscripted and often hilarious original comedy and insights. Westenhoefer’s Key West show is set for 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at the San Carlos Institute, 516 Duval St.
Music fans can share “An Evening with Emily Saliers” Wednesday, Sept. 8, starring the talented singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who is one-half of the popular Indigo Girls. Also a political and environmental activist, Saliers is to appear at The Studios of Key West, 600 White St.
Dance sensation Lori Michaels is set to take the stage Friday and Saturday nights, with a rocking performance at Aqua Nightclub, 711 Duval St. A veteran of performances at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, the high-energy Michaels also is to headline Womenfest’s Saturday street fair and “Dancing on Duval” event in the 700 block of Key West’s legendary Duval Street. In addition, the live music lineup is to include Sister Funk, Jennifer Corday, Lenore Troia, Michelle Dravis and more.
Other standouts on Womenfest’s nonstop schedule include women-only sunset cruises and dolphin-watching excursions, the Leslie Leonelli Memorial Women’s Golf Classic, jet ski tours, poolside parties and contests, happy hour gatherings, an open-air evening of jazz, a group commitment ceremony and champagne brunch, and trolley tours that spotlight the history, contributions and landmarks associated with the island city’s flourishing LGBT community.
