Vandenberg On The Bottom Off Key West

The “Pool” is Open as Divers Descend on Vandenberg

A 13-year project to create a new artificial reef off the Florida Keys for sport divers and anglers successfully culminated May 27 with the scuttling of a 523-foot-long former U.S. Air Force missile tracking ship.

It took just a minute and 54 seconds to sink the Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg, situated about seven miles south of Key West. The bottom of the ship's hull rests on sand in depths that average 145 feet. But the ship is so massive that the superstructure begins about 45 feet below the surface.

Now open to the public for diving, the wreck is already fulfilling its promise of attracting visitors to the Florida Keys. The Vandenberg's mammoth size and interesting superstructure should be appealing to scuba divers of different skill sets.

"This is going to probably be one of the world's classiest wrecks to dive," said Bob Holston, owner of Dive Key West and president of the Keys Association of Dive Operators. "And it's just a cornerpiece of the wreck trek of the Florida Keys."

The Vandenberg completes the southernmost part of the Florida Keys Shipwreck Trail, a series of intentionally sunk vessels that begins off Key Largo with a former Navy landing ship dock, the Spiegel Grove, and ends with the Vandenberg.
