Pianist Smolina to Star with Symphony in Key West Feb. 22

KEY WEST, Florida — Classical music enthusiasts can enjoy a performance by internationally renowned pianist Svetlana Smolina during the South Florida Symphony's Feb. 22 Masterworks concert in Key West.

Titled "Order by Disorder," the event is the third concert in the symphony's 2016-17 season.

Composed of some of the United States' most sought-after professional musicians, the symphony is scheduled to perform at 7:30 p.m. at the Tennessee Williams Theatre, 5901 College Road on the Florida Keys Community College campus.

Guided by award-winning conductor and Key West native Sebrina María Alfonso, the unique orchestra began as the Key West Symphony and later expanded to offer concerts around South Florida.

During the Feb. 22 concert, soloist Smolina is to display her artistry on Sergei Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor. The evening's offerings also include Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's "The Snow Maiden Suite" and Carl Nielsen's Symphony No. 5, Op. 50.

Soloist Smolina has appeared with orchestras and in recitals around the world. Her triumphs include performances with the Mariinsky Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra and Odessa and Nizhny Novgorod Philharmonic in Russia. She also is a recording artist, issuing such works as a solo Chopin album for the Chopin iTunes Project. Her notable appearances as a recitalist include critically acclaimed concerts with violinist Vadim Repin.

Before the February performance in Key West, attendees can enjoy a 6:45 p.m. "symphony chat" with classical pianist and music historian Edward Pitts at the Tennessee Williams Theatre.

The Masterworks series concludes with "Untamed Spirit," featuring pianist Jeffrey Biegel and scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 4.

The symphony's season also includes a March 20 homage to Tony Award-winning musicals titled "And the Tony Goes to ..." with eight vocal soloists.

Tickets are available at keystix.ticketforce.com, priced at $25 to $85 per person depending on seat location.
