Teams of up to four divers compete for cash and prizes. Derby divers who successfully remove invasive lionfish from sanctuary waters can win for most, largest and smallest lionfish. The Upper Keys derby is held at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Visit REEF website to register; teams of up to four people can join. Registration fee is $120, and includes one pair of puncture-resistant gloves, tee-shirts and four drink tickets per team. Divers can participate in a derby from their own private vessel or join a professional dive operator's charter. A mandatory captains meeting is Friday, Sept. 12, at 6:30 p.m., at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.

Key Largo / September 19
The Ocean Life series brings renowned researchers and academics to the Keys to educate, entertain and inspire audiences of all ages. Hosted by Florida International University's School of Environment, Arts and Society and the Friends of the Key Largo Cultural Center, the series features interdisciplinary experts from FIU and the Keys. This series is free and open to the public.

14th Annual Take Stock in Children Backcountry Challenge
For philanthropic anglers, this popular annual gathering proffers an important fundraising opportunity while fishing trout, snook and redfish. Proceeds benefit both local Rotary Club of Key Largo scholarships and Take Stock in Children, a statewide scholarship program for children in seventh through 12th grades. Trophies for first through third place are to be awarded anglers in adult and pro divisions, as well as first-place snook, trout and redfish prizes for juniors age 17 and under.
